Then followed 10 days Embarkation Leave, and we reported back to the Gret Western Hotel in London - good food again and now we were trained soldiers, we looked at London in a different light. During these few days, an issue of tropical kit was made. The journey to India started with a train journey to Gladstone Dock - Liverpool. There was our Troop-ship, a converted Dutch Liner, the SS Johann van Oldenbarnevelt, some 26,000 tons, capacity 5,000 troops. In Maidstone we had been joined ny another Platoon of potential Indian Army Officers. They wer older than we were, as they were ex RAF and ex Fleet Air Army, who had been to Canada to train as
