I was a child during the war, living in Oliver St, in Coventry, and would like to tell everyone that there were a number of raids on the city before the November blitz that destroyed the Cathedral. I remember this because I spent many a night sheltering under the stairs at home!
On the night of the November raid I had been evacuated, with my parents, to Hanwell, near Banbury, where I remember seeing the glow on the horizon, which is remarkable because I was at least thirty miles away!
My Auntie Ada Daines was an Air Raid Warden, and on the night of the November Blitz, she encouraged my Grandfather (Walter Daines) to go into the shelter at Foleshill Rd, near Old Church Rd (next to the tram depo). Unfortunatly the shelter took a direct hit and was distroyed, killing them both. If my grandfather had remained at home at King George's Avenue as he planned, he would have survived as his home was only slightly damaged with the windows being blown out. They are both now commemorated in the communal grave at London Rd cematary, and with a commemomative tree in St. Paul's cematery Holbrooks, Coventry.
If anyone remembers this bombing could you please help shed some more light on events, to help me get a clearer idea of that night?
