I continued as a watch maker during the war, as Switzerland was cut off. The Poles were stationed at Swinderby near Lincoln, they all came into the shop to have their watches mended. They had real quality watches compared to the English. I put a note in the shop window in Polish stating we did watch repairs. Later that day the Police arrived in the shop wanting to know what the notice in the window was about in a foreign language. They were outraged. After I had explained the situation, they calmed down and allowed the notice to stay in the window
