During world war 2 ,I lived in Leicester with my Mother and baby brother .Also in our household was my Grandfather and my Aunty who was only 16.My father was in London with the NFS.
The night Coventry was bombed a stray landmine hit the factory two steets away. Our garden backed onto allotments so there was nothing to stop the blast. All the windows of our house were blown out and cracks appeard down all the walls, but my W
Mother never received any compensation as she was told the damage was not bad enough. We had a long garden with an Anderson shelter at the bottom of it.During an air-raid My Mother, baby brother and Aunty slept there also my Auntys boyfriend came round (He was too young to be in the forces.A neighbour and her daughter used our shelter as well
My Grandfather would not come down, stayed in the house, made tea and brought it to us.As He came out of the house the landmine exploded and He was blown back into the kitchen but fortunately was not hurt.(but He bowed to the moon ever after)
When the ;all-clesr: went an Air-raid warden poked his head into the shelter and asked if we were all right. He said,Coventry copped a packet last night".
My Mother was convinced that an unexploded bomb had fallen behind the shelter and when daylight came she started to search for it.When asked what she was looking for she replied"You know a round black thing like Guy Fawkes had with the word bomb on it.Though she added "the word bomb would be in German"!
