When I entered the Service I was sent to Los Angeles and had a great time. The second year I spent in New Mexico training in a Flight Control Unit. Unknown to me, next door was the Hiroshima Bomb preparation station. In the third year I was shipped to India en route for China. The war in China was nearly over so the squadron flew into Okinawa. The Squadron's mission was bombing Japan as we thought in the preparation for its invasion. The bombing of Hiroshima closed out the war for us even though we were hit by the Kamakazi pilots. Even though we thought we were safe nature took over and we had a typhoon which sank US Navy destroyers and we hid out in caves for protection. With the war's conclusion our squadron's duty was to act as guards over a Japanese POW camp. The main issue we faced was keeping the Okinawan "ladies" out of the prison camp!
