I remember in the middle of winter at the age of 5 being awoken in the middle of the night by the siren, donning a thick coat and making our way to the shelter dug into the ground in the garden. We would climb down into this black hole, stand in about 12 inches of water and watch the doodle bugs etc. droning overhead while we waited for the all clear to sound. My father was in the Home Guard as his employment was a news machinist on the local paper which made him exempt from joining up.
One particular evening a visit to the Doctor meant that my Mother and I had to venture out after dark - she had always drummed into me not to speak to anyone as they could possibly be the enemy. Anyway, on returning from the Doctors with no street lighting we had almost reached home with no incidents of any kind when suddenly something leapt over a fence and I remember my mother screaming and screaming while I gazed down at - just a piece of paper!
