I'm a pupil from prudhoe community high school.northumberland, entering Nellie Christers story onto the website, and they fully understand the website terms and conditions of use.
This is Nellie Christer's story and views on World War 2 and her life during the war. Some may say it was hectic so may say she had it easy and some may refuse to say anything at all. There are so many mixed emotions and feelings of WW2 and Nellie Christer has given me the amazing opportunity to get involved and be a part of her memories.
Nellie was only a young adult when the war broke out ,only aging 21 years of age , a very traumatic time of her life.Something she says she will always remember. When war war declared Nellie was standing in a house in gosforth where she worked and lived as a servant. She was called into the living room by Mr Russells to listen to the radio . She remembers as war was declared Mrs Russells clenched her 2 sons and began to cry.
Nellie was very shocked and worried when war was declared as she had a large family she used to go and see on her days off. She had 6 sisters and 3 brothers.
Luckily Nellie's house was never bombed but says shes known of a whole street being blown up at once killing whole families. However a bomb was dropped near where she worked landing on the main water supply leaving everybody without water. As another job Nellie worked in a factory creating detinators for shells but luckily only did this for a couple of weeks.Nellie was in the Naffi in Boston and Lincolnshire and personally thinks her job was not that difficult as all she ahd to do was feed and serve the soldiers and make them feel as welcome as possible. She also recalls having 2 boyfriends during the war,one being Clarence Probert a polish officer and the other being John Christer who she later got married too and had a family of their own.She would see John every night if possible he would come to the naffi to see her and on their spare time they would go for long walks and picnics. Nellie says that back then clothes weren't the same by far, skirts with thin black tights were fashionable back then and no lady wore trousers.
Nellie joined the armed forces when she was only 22 years old still of a young age . She didnt really have much choice of the role she played in the war because she failed her medical because of very bad eyesight so she was placed in the Naffi. When she left her family they were all very sad and worried about ehr but Nellie says they knew she would make it through and is glad they all had faith in her .
She wasn't given personal training to be in the Naffi just general instructions were given to her. She described her uniform as a knee length blue dress with a white pinnie with NAFFI wrote across it ,she didn't particularly like her uniform even though she says it was fairly comfortable.
She would have to be up at 7 am on the dot for breakfast adn would go to bed whenever she got back from work even then though sleep wasn't that good as it was restless because of airoplanes flying over head throughout the night.
Nellie says she believes her job was rather important as she had the responcibility to feed the soldiers. On D Day she says she remmebers being very happy and relieved and felt like alot of worry had been takin off of her.
Nellie made alot of new friends as her comrades , they were her best friends , her best friend however was Molly Robinson. They always found ways to cheer eachother up when times were sad simply by singing merry songs in groups or even to eachother. unfortunately Nellie does not know any of her friends from the war anymore.Nellie says ' I believe that everybody of a young age should be told about the horrific times of World War 2 as it is something that everybody should know about and something that should never be forgotten!'
