During the Second World War my family lived on the Somerset levels, I had two brothers who were both younger than me. We did not see much action but we did like to watch the searchlights at night because sometimes enemy aircraft were trapped in their beams.
One day when I was about 9 years old we watched with amazement as the sky was full of aircraft, each one towing a glider. I guess this must have been around D Day. Then suddenly we saw one plane with its tow, but no glider. My brothers said " Come on, lets go and find it"
We walked a long way across the fields and dykes and eventually there was the plane lying in a field. There were some soldiers there and they let us get into the plane and sit down, you can imagine how excited me and my brothers were! I have often wondered about this incident since then, did the men get to France or were they excused?
