I was listening to Blair (Blair Jacobs) on Radio Humberside this morning and a man came on talking about a German aeroplane machine gunning Hessle Road and I thought 鈥淥oh that鈥檚 strange, that鈥檚 exactly what happened to us鈥.
Well, we was playing in our garden, me and my brother, we had a big garden in St Nicholas鈥檚 Drive, and this German just came over heading in the direction of Hessle, machine-gunning Pickering Park. There was nothing there to machine gun, just children playing in the park, and he was just machine gunning. My mother ran out of the house and picked up my brother and ran in the shelter with us. We had a concrete shelter in our garden at that time.
The nearest thing that the Germans would have been interested in was the railway sidings, but he was so low that he must have known exactly what he was doing. There was no need for that was there, trying to machine gun women with prams and little kids in a park.
