Whenever Churchill broadcast our entire family would listen and it inspired us to carry on. We had that faith in him, that it would be alright in the end. We had a wireless; it had a wooden pattern with flowers at the front. There was no TV and there were wonderful comedy programmes like Tommy Handley, just kept us going. We used to have our dinner and then listen in the evening. The happiest memory I have on the radio was when Paris was freed. I wept buckets; French was my favourite subject at school.
