When the Air Raid sirens went off, we all used have to go down to the Air Raid shelters. I had my own in my back garden on Grace Road, but I still used to go to the one on the County Cricket ground as there were more people there and we all felt safer.
In the air raid shelters, were rows of bunk beds and a piano. There were no lights, so we had to use candles instead. The whole place was cold and damp. There was always the disgusting smell of cigarette smoke.
By the time it was the last few years of the war, I thought that my Daughter would die of hypothermia, so I used to ignore the warnings and just bring my Daughter into bed with me!
