Some three weeks after I arrived in Newport I was summoned to see the Commanding Officer. He said he had been through my records and I had been selected to go on loan to assist a local firm of Ship's Agents as they were handling a lot of work for the Army and were suffering a staff shortage. He told me that they would probably give me some "Pocket Money", and if they did he didn't want to know anything about it!
At the end of the first week I was given 拢5 plus a bit of overtime which pleased me immensly as it was more than double the pay I used to receive from the Bank.
