This story was collected by Amy Clarke, Louise Frost, Matthew Brennand and Johnathon Atkinson with assistance from Sue Flowers, Green Close Studios and has been added to the site by Anne Wareing of the Lancs. Home Guard.
When the war broke out Mrs Wilson was six and Mr Wilson was four. Mr Wilson's mother had chickens, geese and a dog. As everything was rationed food had to be bought using coupons.
Because of the air raids everyone had to carry a gas mask. Mr Wilson's little Brother had a Mickey Mouse gas mask, but he didn't.
Mr Wilson said that when the air raid siren went off, deaf people had a guide. They didn't really know much about Hitler because they were very young - all they knew was that he was a leader of the army.
Mr Wilson told us the names of the air raid shelters - there was the Morrison shelter that was inside, and the dug out in the garden. Mrs Wilson said that a bomb landed in Bury where she lived and it looked like a Bonfire display. Mr and Mrs Wilson said that it was great at the end of the war - no more blackouts, no more gas masks and the best thing that some fathers came back home.
