I was 10 when war broke out and my earliest memory of its effect was when the evacuees came to the village. The population doubled overnight. We had two brothers from Liverpool aged 5 and 10. They stayed with us for the duration of the war. They were Catholic and my mother had been taking them to church with her, she had a visit from the catholic priest who was incensed that the brothers were being ‘corrupted’ by going to a protestant church. My father ‘escorted’ him down the garden path! However later my father relented and a priest used to come and take a service in a field by our house
