My Uncle Ernie served in the D.L.I. He was in charge of some German P.O.W.s who were carrying out some road repairs in the Blaydon area.
#enroute to the site in the army wagon,l he used to call at our house for a cup of tea. My Gran and Mam used to serve them all with a cuppa and any biscuits which I had not found. Having watched the newsreels at the local cinemas, I knew all about the Germans.
So I used to march around with the German jackstep, with my right hand raised, open palmed and with my left hand index finger under my nose shouting: "Heil Hitler - Heil Hitler." It worked every time. The Germans used to say "He is very good" and give me a bar of chocolate. Not a bad exchange for a few dry biscuits.
