Loud knock - 6am - groan, turn over, fall asleep, clatter of feet, roll out of bed, stagger to bathroom, run to dining room, ugh.. - only fat bacon left, drink tea, rush to ward, nearly collide with man on bike - loud cheers from ward, Tom on bike, arrived paralysed 3 months before. Harry's heart sank, when would his turn come? - he had a head injury. Next, patients' bed baths, then consultant's and doctor's rounds, congratulations for Tom, re-assurance for Harry and a letter for Dick - his wife had given him the best gift of all, he had a baby son. Hearty cheers all round, sister broke all rules and produced a bottle of brandy - more cheers. Later everyone slept so I took my 3-hour off-duty and went back to bed!
