My father served with the RAF during WW2 as an armourer. He told me a story when I was younger about a time he had been arming the machine guns and cannons on a Spitfire which was parked in the 'Butts' waiting to have its weapon alignment checked, but still on its undercarriage and not mounted in the firing position.
My father had completed arming the weapons on the aircraft and one of his colleagues who was working in the cockpit accidently fired the guns.
With the rate of fire of the machine guns a large number of rounds were launched into the air which came down some 25 miles away through a church roof, there were I was told no casualties. Sadly I cannot remember the name of the Church or the RAF base.
