"In 1944 my brother (Don) and I (Eric) were evacuated to Vinton just outside Eccles Lancs. We stayed with a wonderful lady called Mrs Bird. We were given everthing we wanted, FREE Cinema, travel and on a Sunday we used to pump the organ at the local church. We made many friends, we were both paid to be caddies on the Monkton Golf Course.
Everything was going fine until one day a man arrived at 34 Weymouth Road where we lived, and told Mrs Bird we could not stay with her because she was Roman Catholic and we were C of E; she was crying and my younger brother Don told this man where to go! We never did see this man again and I shall never forget Mrs Bird's face when he went!"
