When war was delcared my mother lived in a small mining village outside of Durham.
She was 9 when the war started and can clearly remember many things to do with the war and has passed them down to me and I have passed them down to my daughter.
When war was delcared my grandmother sent her down to the shop to get some fruit as some of it she said my be in short supply as indded it was. She also told me that they had a dog who on hearing the siren could be found in the shelter first as they think that it heard another areas siren before the local one.
She also told me that she can remember collecting scrap to go to the local spitfire fund and that if a raid went on after a certian time then they need not go to school until the afternoon.
Although the times were bad and hopefully never to be repeated she can slao remember the happy times, the community spirit and the belonging that they all had something that we do not have today.
