When I was just over 3 yrs of age (born 01.01.1942)I was introduced forcefully to the sound of V2 bombs, being told what to do when the motors cut out. On one occasion this occurred directly over the village and it was realised at our end of the village that something had been blown up by such a weapon at the other end of the village. There were, at that other end ,two hotel/pubs, one named the Fountain, the other (diagonally across the cross roads from the Fountain) its name not remebered now as it was that day blown to pieces.
Our family at our end of the village knew what had happened to rhe hotel/pub before any of our neighbours, for after playing in the garden early one morning I picked up a toilet roll in the garden, which I took in and gave to my father. He later told me that the name of the Hotel that had been blown up was printed on every sheet of the toilet roll, and had travelled through the air for at least half a mile from the exploded hotel before landing in our garden.
I knew there were shortages in the war, but never expected to receive a toilet roll from a higher power!
