I was 6 when the war started and went to Southrop village school with my brother and sister.I lived on a farm near the village (now a housing estate). The village is near Fairford which was an airbase with many Americans based there. We had a few bombing raids probably directed at the airbase, one of which killed quite a few horses in a field nearby. We could see them parachute jumping over the airbase from our farm.
In the war we made quite a lot of friends, who used to make us apple tarts and desserts. They were friends from the village. The soldiers from the airbase brought us gum.
When the sirens used to go off we had to get home and hide, sometimes under the stairs and sometimes in the village air raid shelter.
We used to visit cheddar Gorge for a holiday
