It was night time and I was fast asleep in bed, when the air-raid sirens went off. My mother didn't have time to get me under the stairs or the coal cellar.

The next thing I knew there was a flash of light and a burning object shot past me - it was actually an incendary device that had burned it's way through the floor and landed on the stone floor of the scullery. It had made a large hole in the floor which was not far from where I was sleeping.

The next we knew the farmer had called us all to the air-raid shelter in Pelham Square and we spent the whole night in the shelter.

It was a close call but it was an exciting night.
