We boarded the Isle of Man steamer early one bright but cold afternoon in Southampton,in October 1939. Each man with his own luggage, had an air of subdued excitement and looked forward to a good trip, but not to the Isle of Man , Oh no ! we all knew that. We hadn't all been given a small book entitled, 'English_French for the Beginner' for nothing. Even those who had made a similar trip some twenty odd years before were looking forward to it. Here they were again medal ribbons and all, with a superior knowledge of previous experiences, ready to share them with anyone willing to listen and take heed.
