This is an account of Irene Greers story told to Craig Brown from Millennium Volenteers and written by Matthew Franklin aged 15 from Holden lane high school.
Irene Greer is a 80 year old women currentlty living at Berryhill retirement centre in Hanley Stoke-On-Trent. When she was 17 she was on the dole during the war and was sent to serve troops in the NAFE in Barnmouth North Wales. Irene was there until the end of the second World War. Irene found the work very hard and she was only able to get home one weekend a month. Irene said that the troops morale was very low but she used to cheer them up in the afternoon by dancing with the troops. Irene told us that there were some Americans based in Stoke and that she used to dance with them as well. Irene Greers brothers were in the army based abroad for 3 years and her other brother was in the Navy and both of her brothers got married. After the War Irene married a sailor from Stoke in 1945 and had 7 children the family in Longton
