My younger sister Pauline volunteered for nursing duites in the war. She liked the work and was doing very well until her skin was adversely affected by the use of strong alkalies fro hand washing. She ended up with acute dermatitis all over her body and was in some distress. She had to be invalided out and it was quite a lengthy recovery. She eventaully went back to office work. I remember searching all over for vitamin C for her - quite difficult in thos days.
My elder sister joined the ATS and was sationed at Dover where there was a great deal of bombing. We were worried about her and were relieved when she was eventually sent out to Nairobi, East Africa. I believe they had a fantastic time in Africa with loud aprties. She has lots of comical tales about life in the ATS.
