The war started as I started school. The boy next door was the first person to tell me about an air raid shelter in the back of the school. I still have bad dreams of going up a small ladder through a hole. We had to practice this and they gave us rubbers to put in our mouths to stop us biting our tongues or lips during the raids with the loud noises from the bombs.
My father kept a shop he was a grocer. This was very stressful. In the ration books were coupons for special foods. My father would keep a book in which he wrote who had had the last special food eg tinned food so all his customers were treated fairly and everyone got a chance to buy the special foods.I never knew what a lampost was as they were never lit.
My parents were very good, they made me feel safe as they never let their own fear show.I had a happy childhood although even today I do not leave any food and save rubber bands!
