I remember the war breaking out on September 3 1939 as I was on a visit to Cambridge, aged 6. I went to school in Yaxley and remember the attractive boxes that the gas masks were kept in - we used to have to wear the masks for practices.
Father was too old for war service and caught the train each day from the Peterborough East Station that existed then to the marshalling yard in the town of March.
In London Road in Yaxley was a camp for Italian prisoners of war. I remember them wandering about the village in their distinctive orange/brown uniform with large patches to make them stand out.
After the war we got hold of a pomegranite, but had no idea how to eat it.
