I lived near the new airfield at Raydon, and can remember the Americans arriving.
They used to give us sweets and give us schoolchildren a party every year. They came round in a truck to take us up to Raydon aerodrome and they鈥檇 deck a hangar out with decorations and a Christmas tree. They gave us food and one of them dressed up as Father Christmas.
It must be said that there was some resentment amongst the local men 鈥榖ecause the Americans had so much more.
But they were ever so friendly. We used to see the airmen in the little village shop at Raydon and they were always after bicycles.
The airmen were issued with bicycles on base to get to and from the aeroplanes and they were ideal for visiting the local pubs. However, there were frequent accidents resulting from what they referred to as the 3 B鈥檚: beer, blackout and bicycles!
