Larry and Derek Franklin (formerly of the Hedley Ward Trio)

In 1944 I was in a base depot in EBOLI, a sergeant called out asking if there were any drivers in the depot, I called out that I was a driver/op, he then said, I will give you a pass to collect a 3 tonner, take these 15 men into Salerno for a break.
I then drove into Salerno and spent the day there, it was night time when we left. I drove and drove knowing that I was lost. Suddenly, in front of me, I saw trucks with crosses on them. I whipped the truck around realising that I must be in the German lines. After driving for only a few minutes, I saw a British soldier in the middle of the road pointing a rifle at me, shouting…..HALT! What’s the password?. I tucked my head out of the window and said I’m sorry , I don’t know any password, I'M LOST !, he kept his rifle pointing at me looked in the back and then waved me on. I finally arrived back at the depot, swearing that I would never volunteer again as a driver………What would be the charge for handing over to the enemy 15 men, a driver and a lorry ?.

Message 1 - Derek Franklin

Fascinated to see this photo of former Hedley Ward Trio member Derek Frankas I am researching into the life and times of Jack Mckechnie, guitarist (my wife's uncle) and fellow former member of the Trio.
Any info/photos/reminiscences etc of Jack or the Trio or its members or their army background would be gratefully received.
Thanking you in anticipation for your help and geetings to you.

Derek Franklin & I were in the 49th LAA Regiment.
We were Driver/wireless operators. We started off in Congleton Cheshire
,& were posted off to North Africa, He did not need to go as he was in the band, but rather them send an older man named Burnard in his place,
he insisted in going.I did not Know that he was part of the Hedly Ward Trio until much later.
I have responded to this spontaneously, without thinking it through,I will continue this shortly with our experiences through Sicily & Italy & my conversation about a year ago with him .
