Memories of my father...
I was a very small child during WW2. I was born in 1933. My dad, John Reid was a mysterious figure - away for most of the War. My mum told me he was a vet with the Royal Army Veterinary Core (RAVC) and "looked after the horses" overseas. It's really peculiar but I can remember his army number vividly. It was 7758557.
He came home for a very short period of time on leave. He had contracted malaria and was quite unwell but he had the luck of the 'devil'.......a bomb dropped one day and fortunately he was up and out of bed, and my mum managed to get him out of the house and into the air raid shelter in the nick of time!!!!!
He died in 1969 at the relatively early age of 60 primarily due to the harsh conditions he had to endure in the War and his malaria.
If anyone remembers my dad or has more information on the role of the RAVC please contact the McLean Museum.
