During the war I lived in Clungunford and I worked on a farm, I was in service. It was a private farmhouse, the man had a business in Birmingham, his son was in the airforce. One day I saw a plane flying low nearby, it was the son. A few days later he was killed in action. I remember the phone call at night it was terrible. My brother was in the ATC in Leintwardine then he went in the RAF but luckily he didn鈥檛 have to go abroad.
We used to go to Craven Arms cinema on Sunday nights A gang of us went on push bikes. We had to have red back lights. I broke the glass in mine and I couldn鈥檛 find any red material to cover it, instead I used some pink material from a pair of my mother鈥檚 knickers. When we came out of the pictures, my friend found that her light had been stolen. As we were cycling out of Craven Arms we passed a sentry box outside the council offices. A policeman stepped out and caught us, he took our names and addresses because my friend had no light and mine was pink instead of red. Next week we had a summons to go to court, but we wrote a letter and pleaded guilty. So we were fined five shillings each which was about a weeks wages for me. My father had no sympathy for us he said 鈥淚t serves you right for tearing about the roads鈥.
