my next move due to mr hitler was to place called westbury.i was evacuated here with my sister joyce, who was about eleven i remember going to the white horse and standing on its head(there is a great white horse carved in the hillside) i do not remember alot about this time but joyce told me we were not looked after very well. she told me i used to get locked under the stairs, which were pitch black, it's funny, i do not like being in a dark or empty house to this day. joyce also said she remembered us finishing our tea and the lady of the house said "you can go out and play out now you two" we duly went out and joyce said on this occasion she went back in and the family we were staying with (the mum,dad and son)were having pudding, something we never got.later on mrs druce whose daughter, jossie, was staying in the same town came down to see her . as she was a big pal of my mums she came to see joyce and myself.when she returned to london she went and saw mum and told her we were being ill treated. mum then sent fred , who was only 16 or 17 at the time,to get us. although mrs druce lived in london in early years she was a countrywoman who came from near ross-on-wye herefordshire a little parish called foy about five miles from Ross.she must have moved back there early on in the war as london was getting"three bells" knocked out of her then. it was about 1940-1941.
