This story was submitted to the People's War website by Keith Montague Treasure and has been added to the site with his permission.
Keith was 18 years of age when he went from being in Blackpool Corporation of Transport to Preston for a tribunal to see if he was fit enough for the services. He was then conscripted into the Tank Corps. in Hampshire 1940. Shortly afterwards he was draughted to Egypt, where he joined the 5th Tank Battalion - 7th Division. They were driven back by Rommel's forces until 1942, where they regrouped and pushed back at Alamein. During this time he turned 21. It was his brithday and all he had was the clothes on his back - there was nothing to eat and no water to drink.
Today Keith wears his royal tank regiment colours with pride - brown, red and green -"through the mud and blood to the green fields beyond".
