At the beginning of the so-called "phoney war" I was evacuated to Buckinghamshire but nothing happened so I was sent back to London. I was about five at the time and I was in London during the Battle of Britain.
Later in the war I was evacuated to Earlham, near Manchester and all the boys from London who were evacuated there hated the place. We thought it was the worst place on earth.
I stayed with a Mrs Dandy and her son and I will never forget it. Every time anything went wrong at the local school the boys from London were blamed.
In London all the chains and railings were taken down during the war and when we got to Earlham they had nowhere to put us for the first few days so we were sent to the church. This still had posts and chain railings round and we were shut in the church, it was like being in prison.
I was taken quite mill while I was there so I came back to London after about six weeks and each time the raids got worse. But it is Earlham I remember more than London.
