I remember the child gas masks - the type which held the baby inside!!

Babies hated going into them, not because they were frightened by the gas masks but rather because mother's face was distorted and yellowed by the plastic face mask.

We also had "Mickey Mouse" masks which made a rude noise when you blew through the flappy rubber breathing tube!!

Message 1 - Child Gas Masks

Posted on: 30 May 2005 by Audrey Lewis - WW2 Site Helper

Thank you for letting me read your observations on a Child's Gas Mask.
I well remember my little baby sister being issued with one. Thankfully it was never used. It makes me shiver ever time I think of it. My sister had a Mickey Mouse one but I was given a grown-up gas mask and it was kept in a box. I used to make different covers for the boxes. It created a new fashion.
Kind regards,
Audrey Lewis
