I remember on sunday morning 3 september listening to the Prime Minister Nweville Chambetlain announcing that war was declared against Germany. I remember my mother crying in the next room: she had been born around 1900 so she had gone through the First world War with food rationing, etc. My sister's boy went and volunteered to fight in WW2 (in the Manchester regiment) as a machine gunner. He had been born on November 11 1918 and he was christened Victor!
In 1944 I was 16 and I and a friend managed to get onto the local firing range with the knowledge of the Home Guard and persuaded them to let us lie down in the depression just short of the targets. this was so we could hear the shots going overhead before the bang from the rifle. They also let us have a go at firing a 303 rifle.
