This story was submitted to the People's War site by CSV/大象传媒 Radio Nottingham on behalf of Patrick Bettison with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

My dad, Jim, was unable to serve in the armed forces because he had a leg ulcer. He worked for a coal merchant in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Travel was restricted at the time. Jim was delivering coal to farms in Lincolnshire and travelling further than he should have been. A police car spotted him and gave chase. Eventually it caught up with him. To his surprise, when the police officers spoke to him, they didn't want to charge him, they just wanted two spare bags of coal. He gave them the coal and they let him go.
