I was about 12 or 13 years old. I went to the Apollo cinema around 7pm. At around 8pm, a notice appeared on the screen to tell us that an air raid had started. At around 9pm, another notice appeared; the cinema was closing as the bombing was getting heavy. I came out and found that all the trams had stopped running. I could see a red glow in the sky over the centre of Manchester. I decided to walk home. A lot of the shop windows in Ardwick were broken and their contents lying on the pavement. I could hear the shrapnel falling. When I got as far as Grey Street Ardwick, a policeman got hold of me and took me into an air raid shelter which was in the basement of the vinegar works on Stockport Road. At around 1am, I sneaked out and ran home. I lived in Longsight. My parents were glad to see me, and I didn't get a clout.
