My name is Ann Jones. I was 20 years old when the war started. I was married and my husband was a Merchant Seaman. I lived at home with my mum and dad and sisters, my brothers were away at sea. It was a very worrying time for us all.
I can remember one incident; I had been to our local, and on coming out a firebomb dropped on my foot. Luckily the Air Raid Warden was near by and put it out and helped me home. I was working in the bag house then, but you just had to carry on working.
It was around this time that I received news that my husband鈥檚 ship had been hit. It was a miracle that he wasn鈥檛 hurt as it was an oil tanker.
It was May when we were all evacuated to Burscough to stay in a big hall, like a hostel. We were there for six months. My dad refused to go, he said if Hitler wanted him he would have a fight on his hands! Some of my younger brothers were evacuated to Wales. It was a very worrying time, and a terrible time to live through. For months after, when we heard a plane we thought they were coming back to bomb us.
When it was over we had a street party and everyone was dancing and singing.
