Pigeon Squad
This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Sylvia Perry, a volunteer from 大象传媒 Essex, on behalf of Jim Pearson and it has been added to the site with his permission. Jim Pearson fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
Grandfather was a pigeon fancier and, presumably through his pigeon club, his pigeons were involved in supporting the Resistance in France. He would crate his pigeons which were sent to Hornchurch Aerodrome and from there flown to France. Coded messages were then sent via the pigeons back to him and the message capsule was taken immediately to Romford Police Station and from there transported to Intelligence H.Q. in London. If Grandfather happened to be out or at work when a pigeon arrived, he had to be contacted at once so that he or another of the pigeon fanciers could come and retrieve the message in order that no time was lost in handing it over to the authorities.
