My husband (now dead) lived in Gleave Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham. He had a terrible time. Elliott鈥檚 factory was at the bottom of the road. Sometimes they were more than 24 hours down in the air raid shelters. Their house hadn鈥檛 a single pane of glass left in it. They suffered food shortages and had to queue up to get everything.
He was evacuated twice, for a short time to Wythall then finally to Ibstock in Leistershire. He didn鈥檛 have fond memories of this. Apparently he was separated from his brother because they fought. He lived with the lady who kept the fish and chip shop over it. Meals were irregular. Every day he got the cane at school for bad handwriting.
In later years the smell of fish and chips made him sick.
It never seems to get dark in summer then, with Double British Summer Time (2 hours added on to Greenwich Mean Time)
