This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from Radio Cambridgeshire Action Desk at Bircham House on behalf of Lillian Turner and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Turner fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

I worked down at the Cambridge railway cleaning the engines. We could either choose to go away or work on the railway and I choose the railway. It was hard work as you had to go into the boiler and clean them, as well as other jobs. We worked from 9 to 6 and we had to get a bus from Sawston to Cambridge 5 days a week. We had lunch at the railway. We all went together we had to, it wasn鈥檛 a nice job but we just got on and did it. In all I worked there for 12 months. Before and after that job I worked at the leather factory in Sawston and after the war I went back to my job at the leather factory. I met my husband at the railway, he was a driver there.
