I was born in 1963, long after the end of the Second World War. However, the impact that it had on my parents, both of whom experienced it as children, was reflected onto my sister and myself and we grew up surrounded by stories of "during the War." Later we persuaded our parents to write down their memories, and I am glad that I am able to share them in this way. My parents have both since passed away, but I am sure they would have been pleased that their experiences can be recorded for future generations.
Just as an aside, I also grew up with a fascination for Germany and the German language, ending up studying it at University. I lived in Germany for several years and have many German friends, all of which my parents accepted without any feeling of bitterness or resentment, despite the fact that the War robbed them of much of the joys of childhood.
