Bill's Story.
I was in Gaum onboard HMS 'Duke of York' when the bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima and our orders were to proceed to Tokyo Bay.On 2nd September 1945 we were part of a fleet of ships escorting the Battleship 'Missouri' into Tokyo Bay.On entering the Bay I saw overhead a magnificent sight where over 2000 aircraft were keeping whatever was left of the Japanese Airforce at bay.General McArthur was on board 'Missouri' and received a delegation from the Japanese High Command who put pen to paper to sign a unconditional surrender. Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser signed on behalf of His Majesty's Government.
