This is a photograph of George Hodges taken in 1942 at the age of 14. He was a part-time messenger in the National Fire Service for three years and is perhaps the youngest holder of the Defence Medal. This service meant that for all this time he was "on duty" away from home every other night, all night! At the same time he was at grammar school studying for his school certificate (which he gained) working on a farm at weekends and holidays and not infrequently before travelling some twelve miles to school. He went on to serve with the Household Cavalry from 1945 to 1948, and is presently the area representative in Shropshire for the Blues and Royals Association.
Subsequent to his military sevice he entered local goverment and later into university administration at Sussex and Warwick Universities. Retiring after 33 years service, he now (2005) runs a smallholding with his wife at Edgerley near Oswestry.
