I was based at RAF Llandwrog late 1942. The massive military army exercise took place in the South of England in preparation for the invasion of Germany.
RAF pilots were selected for observation purposes as to how vulnerable large concentration of trips would be if exposed to air attacks so,where ever this situation occurred, reports could be collated. A top secret meeting was held in a large hall where we were addressed with instructions from senior personnel and told that anyone found talking about the exercise would instantly be dismissed from the service and would ‘get his bowler hat’.
We followed all large troop concentrations, walked for miles, sometimes jumped on a military vehicle and shared their biscuits. A large kitchen copper tub was given or obtained to boil a few hundred chicken eggs.
It was difficult as the evenings were very cold and we had to be out under all conditions.
With only our sleeping bags to protect us in the mornings we were often frost covered. If you exposed your head at night owls, foxes and other night birds would sound the dead of night.
The complete operation was most memorable and in a way very enjoyable.
