I was in heavy ACAC guns. My job was to put the shells in. I was at Croydon and Raynes Park. At one point I was in Ireland for practice. I lived on camp in wooden huts with about 25 in each hut.

The guns were all around the edge of the gun park, like a necklace, so that they didn't shoot each other but went straight up. Our big guns were to fight the German planes when they came over. We used to get an alarm to go down to the gun park if they were coming over. Then we would load the guns up. We stood behind the guns and if you were number 1 you would press the button that would light the fuse. You just sat there for a while and then went straight back to the huts waiting for the next lot.

In our time off we played around the gun park. We were not supposed to touch the guns, but we must have touched a few! We had a great time.
