We were living in Edmonton, N.London. We were not near an Underground station but we had an Anderson shelter in the garden. In the winter time it was easier for Mother to keep us in the house when there was an Air-Raid so Father pulled the dining table right out and underneath put a mattress, blankets, pillows etc and we slept there most nights.

The daytime story I used to remember concerned the cake factory at the back of our house. It was called the 'Golden Ray'. One day we were watching two men who were up on the factory roof repairing it. Suddenly a German plane came right over the factory - very low. The men ducked as It went over. Within the next day or two we heard that this plane had crashed over the Tottenham Marshes and the pilot had been killed.
