In 1941 our local Infant/Junior school was destroyed by a landmine. The local church hall was brought into use as an Infant school which I attended at the age of five. The Battle of Britain had been fought and won and Jerry was in the habit of sending Fighter/Bombers over the Channel to bomb targets of oppourtunity. We were in class when one of these raids took place and they decided that the church was a good target. The bomb came through the wall of the hall, passed over our heads, exited through the back wall and bounced on the Vicarage lawn before progressing around one hundred yards to demolish a large property that had been a Hotel pre war. One of the class had been made to stand facing the front wall as a punishment and was killed by the falling masonary, apart from a few minor scrapes he was the only casualty. I remember quite vividly the noise and clouds of white swirling dust followed by the explosion down the road.
