My grandfather Alex Gowans was on board 'H.M.S Arley' at Dunkirk. It was berthed at Dunkirk with two other ships on its outside. They were divebombed by German planes with the result that the outermost ship was destroyed, and the ship in the middle was badly damaged. The'Arley' and the damaged ship then tried to leave the harbour , but the one which had been damaged was limping out of port and impeding the other vessels entering and exiting the harbour. The decision was taken to sink this ship so the 'Arley ' fired on and sunk this ship , and my grandfather told me they knew there were wounded men below decks. I do not relate this story as a criticism but as a fact of war where unpalatable decisions have to be made for the greater good. My grandfather was a fisherman from the North east of Scotland.
